Hypothesis
Value at a glance
Our customers told us that they get a ton of value from glanceable experiences like the down cast light (which indicates armed state via color,) and full video events when the doorbell rings.
By providing more glanceable information, we can bring more value from our system to the customer increasing product satisfaction.
Storyboard
I generated storyboards to work through different concepts of types of glanceable information that we could provide users in the home environment. Information that was explored included package detection, lurker events, who is entering the home, and displaying what doors and windows are open.
Feature Goal
Bring more awareness and peace of mind into the home.
We know that our current panel experience is valued by customers because it provides peace of mind while they are home. We want to improve this experience by displaying important information at-a-glance.
Build for the future.
We want to allow our experiences to grow to increase user engagement and decrease attrition.
Our current experience is limited in space to introduce new features and functionality that can unlock new value and flexibility for all types of users. We can also create new ways to gather usage metrics with the implementation of these features, helping us better understand our users.
Belong in the home.
Customers are delighted by experiences that compliment their home environment. We need to continue to create future experiences that allow users the flexibility to put the devices wherever they want. We can do this through ambient light sensors, and interfaces that compliment the home environment.
Research & Insights
Feature Ranking
15 participants were asked to rank information from most important to least important.
Security status was ranked most important among most participants. Second was door locks, and third was camera feed.
Sensors, garage door, and thermostat averaged out to be the fourth most important feature among the participants.
3/5 of participants specified time as a feature that they would expect and want to see on the display.
Wire-framing
Wirframing & interaction
Ideas that were explored included showing what doors and windows were opened and left opened, live video of real time events, constant live video feed of a chosen camera, and location based information showing who’s home and who’s away.
Concept Down-Selection
The MVP was narrowed down to displaying time, weather, and system status. System status includes armed state, system alerts like low battery, and whether a door or window is open.
MVP Refinement & Prototyping
Information optimized to be viewed from a distance of 10 feet. A ‘dark mode’ palette was used to allow the UI to blend in with the hardware and from a distance the UI looks seamless with the display hardware. A darker screen also creates a less intrusive experience in the home environment, meeting the goal and intent of ‘blending in with the home.’
Implementation & Delivery
This feature has been released to new customers who have purchased the Vivint System with plans to roll out to our current customer base.
